It looks like you answered your own question as I was creating the screenshots. You can set custom to any size you like, it saves automatically to your settings (unless you're using the trial and then it may time out before they're stored). It should switch almost instantly, even on my $60 Win10 tablet it updates in less than 0.5 second.

The range is 0.1 to 10, so when you enter 20 it is rejected. It wasn't designed to generate grids, that's just a "bonus" use of the hatching feature.

@Zax When i try to make this grid to burn i followed everything to the letter but i only get horizonta lrectangles i dont get ant vertical lines to make a grid pattern any ideas to what this could be i am using the most up to date version 1.04j

You have it set for horizontal hatch.
Change the hatch setting to crosshatch and set it to + by right clicking (see my screenshot above).

It isn't selected, click it so there's a check mark. It will change immediately.

@Zax I did have it selected but turned it back off when i was doing something else.I have changed it all back to how it should be now

Your screenshots never show it turned on?
Just click Cross Hatch (+) with the left mouse button so there's a check mark.
